OUR EDUCATION CURRICULUM

At MODEST STANDARD SCHOOLS, we aim to meet the requirements of the yearly Basic and Secondary Education Curriculum in Nigeria. We operate the 6-3-3-4 system of education as stipulated in both the Lagos State and National Curriculum of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The school curriculum is a dynamic and open document that is constantly changing with the needs, challenges and aspirations of the society. Thus, we provide the school curriculum in line with global best practices.

The Structure and Expectation of Education Curriculum

The school curriculum is a dynamic and open document that is constantly changing with the needs, challenges and aspirations of the society.

It is expected that every learner who has gone through the 9 years of basic education should have acquired appropriate levels of literacy, numeracy, manipulative, communicative and life skills; as well as the ethical, moral and civic values needed for laying a solid foundation for a life-long learning; as a basis for scientific and reflective thinking.

PRE-PRIMARY CURRICULUM

In addition to the approved curriculum of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, we also adopt and employ the Montessori Method, which is child centered and practical approach to teaching the pupils.

We offer the following subjects at the Nursery and Kindergarten levels:

BASIC 1-9 CURRICULUM (PRIMARY & JSS1-3)

Basic Education Curriculum Levels

The original structure of the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum is presented under the following categorization:

  • Lower Basic Education Curriculum-Primaries 1-3;
  • Middle Basic Education Curriculum-Primaries 4-6;
  • UpperBasic Education Curriculum-Junior Secondary, JS 1-3.

The subjects and contents flow systematically and spirally from Primary 1 to JS 3.

PRIMARIES 1-3 (LOWER BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM)

3. Nigerian Languages (One Nigerian Language)
  • National Policy on Education (NPE) stipulates that the medium of instruction should be the language of the immediate environment of the child.
  • Schools are free to select such Nigerian Language to be taught.
4. Basic Science and Technology (BST)
  • Basic science
  • Basic Technology
  • Physical and Health Education
  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Each of the listed components will serve as themes for the Basic Science and Technology Curriculum
  • Climate change is part of the Basic Science theme
  • Disaster Risk Reduction Education and Consumer Education are infused into Basic Science and Technology Curriculum
  • Create enabling environment for the subject in all schools by making computer available in schools.
5. Religion and National Values (RNV)
  • Christian Religious Studies/Islamic Studies
  • Social Studies
  • Civic Education
  • Security Education
  • Listed components will serve as themes in the Religion and National Values Curriculum
  • Contents are planned for all children to take Social Studies, Civic education and Security Education themes
  • Separate classes should be run for CRS theme and IS theme
  • Consumer Education, Disaster Risk Education and Peace and Conflict Resolution curricula are infused into the Civic Education, Social Studies and Security Education themes
  • Create enabling environment for the subject in all schools
6. Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) Important for preservation of our cultural heritage and fostering creativity.
7. Arabic Language Optional
Note:
  • Minimum of 6 subjects; Maximum of 7 subjects
  • Emphasis should be on basic concepts and their explanations
  • Teaching and learning activity must be creative, innovative, and practical.
  • Avoid content repetitions across themes and subjects
  • Admit only basic contents from old curriculum.

PRIMARIES 4-6 (MIDDLE BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM)

  • Avoid content repetitions across themes and subjects
  • Admit only basic contents from old curriculum.

NB: The above PRIMARY (Basic 1 to 6) curriculum pays particular attention to the teaching of reading. Consequently:

  1. The English Studies curriculum for Primaries 1-3 is focused on the teaching of the following reading skills: Concepts of Print, Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension and Vocabulary Acquisition;
  2. The Religion and National Values (RNV) included Drug Abuse Education, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Climate Change, Consumer Education and relevant elements of the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) into relevant contents of the curriculum.
  3. Teaching and learning emphasis is on skill development: creative thinking skills, entrepreneurial and work skills.

The systematic connections exist among/between Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary schools curricula contents.

UPPER BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM (JUNIOR SECONDARY 1-3)

We provide the following Basic Features of upper Basic Education (i.e. JSS1-3)

  1. Core subjects are English Studies, one Nigerian Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, Religion and National Values, Cultural and Creative Arts, Pre-Vocational Studies, French and Business Studies.
  2. Elective (optional) Subject: Arabic Language
  3. French and Pre-Vocational studies are introduced in Primary 4 as core subjects, while Business Studies is introduced as a core subject at the Junior Secondary school level.
  4. Basic science and Technology, Religion and National Values and Pre-Vocational Studies are composite subjects

10. Arabic Language Optional

NB: In 2012, FME Revised the BEC to comprise of ten (10) subjects namely:

  1. English Studies,
  2. Mathematics,
  3. Basic Science and Technology,
  4. Religion and National Values,
  5. Cultural and Creative Arts
  6. Business Studies,
  7. Nigerian Languages,
  8. Pre-vocational Studies,
  9. French,
  10. Arabic.

In the process of review in 2015, particular efforts were made to further reduce content overload, repetition or duplications within and across subjects without compromising depth, appropriateness, and interrelatedness of the curricula content. In addition, the curriculum is organized to ensure continuity and flow of themes, topics and experience from primary school to junior secondary school levels.

Since the curriculum represents the total experiences to which all learners must be exposed, the contents, performance objectives, activities for both teachers and learners, teaching and learning materials and evaluation guide are provided.

At each Lower, Upper Basic & Senior Education Curriculum, every school has the choice of offering all or dropping the optional subject(s). Hence MODEST Standard Schools has adopted all subjects, excluding number 7, 9 & 10 respectively, which is optional, on the table of list.

At the level of senior secondary (SS1-3) education, all Students are specialized. As such the subjects are departmentalized as follows:
